OVERVIEW

Building relationships is about the connections we make with other people to form strong bonds to help achieve our goals (in and out of sport). It involves communication, trust and support.

We can summarise this as the three C’s; closeness, commitment, and collaborative.

Relationships, including the one you have with yourself, are vital to a gymnast’s development & wellbeing. Gymnasts with healthy, positive, and supportive relationships are more likely to be happier and engaged in their development.

Creating and maintaining effective connections with others helps gymnasts control positive influences and manage negative ones across different relationships i.e., athlete & athlete; athlete & coach; athlete & parent.

Coach Resources

Coaches play a huge role in the development of this skill with the gymnasts in their sessions/clubs. Coaches who value and focus on effective, positive relationships with gymnasts are guaranteed benefits regardless of success because they will have helped to influence positive moral and ethical behaviours. Through strong relationships and a holistic approach to coaching, young gymnasts will develop as people and in time performers.
